Coalesce is a NYC-based digital product agency that's been building software for 20 years. Agentic development is now central to how we work, and we're expanding the team of engineers who can lead it.
This isn't a role for someone who uses AI as a writing assistant. It's for someone who builds with AI as a development primitive and can design the workflow that makes AI productive on any project, for any client, in any stack.
We take on brownfield projects in PHP, Python, Java, and whatever else clients are running. Your job is to build the AI workflow that works on top of the existing stack, not to rewrite everything in your preferred language.
We've been building together since 2006 and we're still a small, tight team. HQ is in NYC, with engineers across the US and Chile. You'll have direct influence on how we build across the clients we work with, which spans media, fintech, education, and real estate.
Applications are only received at getonbrd.com.
Own the AI SDLC on client projects. When a new engagement starts, you'll design the full agentic workflow from scratch: spec structure, context architecture, agent task decomposition, gate placement, and regression strategy. You'll document it in a way that the whole team can follow.
Write and maintain specs that drive implementation. Living specification documents that become the source of truth for AI agents and human reviewers alike.
Build context architecture for every codebase. Whether it's a brownfield WordPress monolith or a greenfield Astro app, you'll create the tooling configuration that gives AI agents the right working memory and constraints. Most AI failures are context failures.
Stand up the automated QA layer. You configure the safety net that lets agents move fast without breaking things. You define what "done" looks like before a single line is written.
Triage agent output. You know which outputs to accept, which to redirect with a tighter prompt, and which to throw out and write yourself. Your judgment is the quality gate.
Ship work. This is a production role. You're accountable for delivery, not just workflow design.
Non-negotiables:
This isn't a role where you'll be handed detailed tickets and asked to implement them. We need someone who can read a product brief, design the full implementation strategy including the AI workflow, and own it end to end.
This also isn't a role for someone who thinks of AI as autocomplete. The person we're looking for has a genuine point of view on how agentic development changes the craft: spec writing, context design, quality assurance, team communication.
